ABOUT SURFING: Almost every year one of our great staff pushes us beyond the normal, and urges us to go outside of what we think Calleva is and add something new. It is why every year our program changes, activities diversify, and Calleva remains at the top. Progressive thinking and progressive leadership. This year, Kevin White will lead 8 lucky campers for week long excursions to the eastern shore to learn and live the exciting sport of surfing. Here they will learn basic surfology, while riding some tasty waves. The eastern shore offers excellent beginner waves with nice shores, and an abundence of instructional opportunities. Surfers will travel to several beaches and learn about the waves, sets, and environmental hazards that impact rider and water. Down time will be "Beach time" with many alternative beach games, and beach sports.

Meet the Instructor: TBD

BASIC ITINERARY:

Putting an RV anywhere in the Delmarva area is ideal because there are so many places to surf located within a short distance and plenty of other activities readily available in the chance of bad whether or a flat spell. State parks and public beach access provide lots of beach to find surf.

Monday:

Leave Rileys to base camp... a good 4 hr drive. Stop for lunch along the way. Arrive at base camp and get everyone situated with gear and go over hazards. Depending on time, hopefully grab an evening session in the water. Set up camp and prepare for dinner. Discuss surfing - jargon, technique, stories/experiences...surround ourselves with surf.

Tuesday/Wednesday:

Up and at it early for breakfast and to pack for surf. Drive to whichever beach we decide to surf at. Surf till lunch. Lunch, I think it would be easiest to find lunch at a subway or let the little ones choose where...bring own money for lunches. Surf the afternoon. Pack up to head back for dinner.

Thursday: Similar to any other morning, however, I think it would be cool to hold a surf competition this day and maybe into friday morning for the final heat. But it will give a good opportunity for the kids to really get into it. Also, it will be a more laidback day as those who want to surf can be out in the water with an instructor and those that want to hang out in the shade on the beach and watch the competition can do so as well. I could set it up as a team competition with two or three teams to make it more exciting .

Friday: Breakfast and pack up. Hopeful morning session. Drive back as surfing champs and win the song competition.

Other possibiliities: If the surf is flat, poor weather, etc... Boardwalks - endless fun! Surfshops - give the kids a time to indulge in the culture. Rent bikes. Travel to different state parks.

All itineraries are subject to change due to staff/camper decision based upon skill levels, water levels, environmental hazards, and thirst for adventure. All changes to itineraries go through the Calleva Office first!

BASIC NEEDSLIST: All campers are expected to have everyday: Water bottle, Swimming Suit (plus Shorts, & T-Shirt), Towel, Sun Hat, Water Shoes, & personal Sunscreen. Campers can either bring or rent a surfboard. "softboard" is preferred for safety, floation, and ease of instruction.

BASIC OVERNIGHT NEEDS: Sleeping Pad, Sleeping Bag, Daily Needs, change of clothes, Toilet Kit, Flashlight/Headlamp, Cup, Bowl, & Spoon, Warm Jacket, Rain Gear, and $$ for boardwalk games.
