2008 EXPLORER CANOEING
Canoeing happens in one full day of adventure. Explorers paddle from the banks near our office to the top of the island. From here they hike down trail to our island and participate in treasure hunt style activities. They have all day out to explore, swim, and hike the multiple islands below the breaks. Campers engage in group and individual ropes course challenges that encourage them to think out of the box and expand their concepts of cooperation. Playing is a big part of this day, and the trails on Virginia side weave through rocks and hills that play with the imagination. Before they can wrap up the activities for the day, campers must return to the canoes for the return voyage. This return trip gives us another chance to work on those base paddling skills and impart on our campers a love for the river.
All explorers do all activities, unless for health reasons.
There is nothing better then having a parent of an Explorer as the Instructor. Last year, Ben Ritter made this his program and it was the highlight of many Calleva campers. A huge "war canoe" was the perfect ride for 2 groups to go to the island at one time!!! That's right, a sturdy boat that moved campers this way and that. Getting to the island as a large group made for a very unique experience.
This Year, we continue the program with some added fun. The "war canoe" may magically change from pirate ships to huck finn's raft, either way we will let our imaginations get away from us!
