About Sampler CLS: This all-encompassin adventure to West Virginia was Calleva's original summer high adventure trip and it always fills quickly. Our 2010 Sampler will include canoeing, rock climbing, repelling, camping, and possibly caving. The focus is to have fun Calleva style while learning new skills and gaining an aptitude for leadership. We will start the week off with an overnight canoe trip on the South Fork of the Potomac River. After we have mastered our paddling skills we will change gears and hit the rock. We will head over to Seneca Rocks to master climbing and belaying. Not only will be get a chance to do some climb but students will participate in a monster repel off the top of Seneca Rocks. Finally we will end the week with an activity that the group chooses from a long list of possibilities. Last year the group choose to go caving and we explored the endless passages of New Trout cave. There is no experience necessary for this week long adventure down in West Virginia.

2010 WEST VIRGNINIA ITINERARY:

  • Monday:  We will start our adventures with the best canoeing overnight down the South Branch of the Potomac River, where we enter a steep cut through two mountain tops - guaranteed Bald Eagle spottings!
  • Tuesday:  After surviving our paddle, we will reunite w/ our bus and head down to camp near Franklin, WVA at one of the best swimming holes!  Our camp lies underneath a cliff band pocketed with caves.
  • Wednesday:&nbs p; We are ready to try a little climbing today at Nelson Rocks Preserve or Seneca Rocks and climb to the peak.  Get comfortable with heights on some of WVA most scenic rocks!
  • Thursday:Today we are headed UNDERGROUND to explore Trout and New Trout Caves. These systems are huge and still contain the sensitive indigenous bats of the area.
  • Friday:  Swimming will be a part of each day, but this day, we’ll try to clean up a little and head back to camp—skilled, exhausted, and full of stories!
