Adventure Camps are at the heart of Calleva. From the very beginning, we've believed in the idea of offering a camp with small numbers of kids with a shared, specific focus. A week seemed just about right to introduce an outdoor adventure activity and allow the experience to blossom. We've built our curriculum around a "building block" style that brings the campers along a journey of learning and fun. As campers develop at their own pace, tools and instruction are made available, goals are set and achievments celebrated for the individual as well as the group. Campers work within a group of 12, led by our Calleva-trained Activity Instructor and Group Counselor. Each activity's fun-filled curriculum prepares campers for the Thursday overnight. The chosen activity is the focus, but each week also includes fun group challenges and games. Adventure weeks are offered as one-week programs, but are complimentary.  For campers who want to combine weeks and continue their development, Calleva can help create a multiple-week experience that allows them to mature within their interest or combine skills for all-around development. All campers who sign up for Adventure Camp are expected to participate in the Thursday overnight. Early parent pick-up or late drop-off is always difficult and sometimes unlikely on Thursdays, since groups are scattered far and wide.

Letter from ADV Director

Activities:

Rafting, Kayaking, Adventure Island, Sailing, Fishing, River Ecology, Building Green, Growing Green, Mountain Biking, Climbing, Duncan's Adventure, Gresko's Adventures, Whitewater Canoeing, Horseback Riding, and -- NEW for 2012 -- Stand-Up Paddleboarding.

Operations: Adventure Camps operate Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm, except for the Thursday overnight. Overnight locations range from 1-3 hours away, and can be found on each Activity's page. Daytime activities take place at local parks & recreational facilities, requiring additional travel. We also provide transportation to and from Camp from Metropolitan Area "pick-up points" (see registration form for locations & times). Bus pick-up times range between 8-9am and drop-offs are between 4-5pm. Parent pick-up from Calleva activities can be arranged through the office. Itineraries: We want our camps to be flexible with their itineraries, so each year our Instructors create their own program based on their personal teaching styles, skills and location familiarity.  Every week takes advantage of alternative options for developing various skills, overnight variety, and optimum fun level designed for the specifics of the group. This has created the ideal environment for both staff and campers to flourish. Staff get fresh programs week to week with new and fresh energy that can be directed to a variety of challenges. Campers get a week that as a group they can heavily influence. Through teamwork, skill comprehension, and enthusiasm, campers can really take their skills as far as they wish, or steer the week's goals to fit their interests.

Programming: Although our Adventure Camps are one week programs they also work extremely well for campers who return week after week, year after year. Groups are small: 12 campers, 1 Instructor, 1 Counselor, 1 Assistant. Each Activity has a series of skill cards that offer challenges to work on constantly.  Our Instructors are trained to recognize individual needs and encourage personal growth within the group. We also emphasize the importance of group cohesion and have patterned our camps like families. Our staff function in the parental roles, making sure the children are safe and nurturing them to grow in a positive environment. Many of the week's activities also focus on fun challenges and games, tailored for teambuilding and success within the group.  Scholarships Available.
