Farm Internships

"Every day is President's Day when you have an intern!"  ~David Letterman

Calleva is an acting MAEOE Certified Environmental Center and performs its mission through a variety of efforts with schools (including high school internships and service projects) as well as summer camp and scout programs. Calleva runs a sustainable farm, experiments with biodiesel production and alternative building methods (hay bale construction, water catchment, containment & re-use, composting, gray water ponds), and runs workshops in forestry, invasive weeds, stream health, bats, bees and more.

Internships are:

  • unpaid; longer term (6-12 weeks)
  • not camp-specific (goals further Calleva's overall mission)
  • focused on individual intern's area of expertise and education
  • goal oriented with tasks assigned as appropriate
  • customized long-term projects geared to intern's educational or professional goals
  • supportive in roles as resident expert and occasional teacher/planner related to programs

All Calleva interns will be expected to:

1) Work with Calleva mentor to develop a project plan that notes reasonable and measurable goals and timelines for the duration of the internship 2) meet at least once each week with Calleva project mentor to track progress and assess project/adjust timeline as necessary 3) support instructors and facilitators involved in all areas of Calleva programming: schools, camp & other environmental-ed groups 4) complete tasks as assigned by Calleva mentor.

Internships: Calleva Internship Candidates should select the subject area that is most compatible with their education, experience and professional goals:

  • Environmental Studies
  • Environmental Education
  • Sustainable Agriculture
  • Outdoor Adventure
  • Photography
  • Biodiesel

IN ADDITION:  Calleva is looking for a highly motivated intern who has experience in one of the following areas:  forest management, invasive weed control, waste minimization & trash management, stream science and the interest in creating a nature classroom for environmental education.  Along with choosing a project in one of these areas, our greatest concentration for this year’s intern is to help us develop curriculum for grades K thru 12 to help educate our client schools in the Maryland about the MD Environmental Literacy graduation requirements.  This intern must be knowledgeable on the 8 state standards to be infused into the MD school curriculum as of the June 2011 MD state mandate.  A background in primary and secondary education, along with Environmental Science and knowledge of developing cross curriculum lesson plans would be most helpful for this year’s intern. To consider candidates we ask that they create a sample project design outline and design a cross curriculum sample lesson plan for K-12 in one of the areas prefaced above. Once accepted into the Calleva College Intern program, interns will be expected to design, implement and complete a project, as well as provide lesson plans for high school, middle school and grade school level children and help provide training and support to Calleva facilitators in one or more of these areas. (mentor: Karen@Calleva.org)
