Flowing in our backyards is the mighty Potomac River and we figured what better place to explore than right here. Spend a week with Calleva kayaking this beautiful stretch of river, and living out of your kayak! Calleva has a new fleet of boats that make packing, paddling, and traveling with loaded boats a unique and thrilling adventure. We head downstream with the hopes of reaching Georgetown. Along the way we master all of the necessary kayaking skills to get us ready for the Mather Gorge and Little Falls. We spend the night on small secluded islands along the way. This is a great trip for a first time boater or the seasoned veteran. If you are interested in kayaking... this is a MUST!

* During Week 5, Nick Markoff will be leading his annual WV Kayaking for more advanced kayakers.

KAYAKING Potomac ITINERARY*

  • Monday: Meet at Calleva’s main office located on Riley’s lock road between 7-8am for continental breakfast. We will look over our gear, get our kayaks, and talk about the week. The day will be spent learning the basic paddle strokes in Seneca creek and kayaking down the GW canal. We’ll camp out our first night on Calleva’s adventure island.
  • Tuesday: We’ll leave Adventure Island and paddle down the Seneca Breaks. Get in another run of the GW canal. Then paddle down to Swains Lock and camp there for the night. Today we will go over how to do a paddle roll in the kayak.
  • Wednesday: The plan is to kayak down to the Mather Gorge and surf Maryland Chute. We’ll head over to Virginia and check out Difficult Run cave. We will also learn how do to a combat paddle roll, and navigate class 3 rapids. We will camp at Marsdens Tract.
  • Thursday: Today we will paddle down Yellow falls and Stubblefield falls. We will rapid swim down Scotts Run and hone our skills by doing some harder moves in the rapids, and learning how to scout and read whitewater. We will camp out at Lock 6.
  • Friday: We will put everything we learned to the test today and paddle down Little Falls—a nice Class III-IV run. We will run this twice and debrief about the week and about highs and lows. We return to Riley's Lock for dinner & shares between 6-7pm. Parents are invited.
