Come aboard the sailing yacht CALLEVA for an unforgettable week long sailing adventure! The CLS team will sail out of our Home Port, Calvert Marina, Solomons Island to different places along the Lower Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. This is a unique opportunity to intimately experience wind, wave and marine life like you never have before!  The CLS team consist of 6/8 person crew (CLS students), expert Calleva captain (Instructor), and first mate (counselor). Crew members will learn to work together as they gain new sailing skills, learn to navigate a larger boat, and discover the tremendous beauty of the Lower Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Hidden coves will be sites for overnight moorings where we'll prepare meals and enjoy swimming dips overboard. There will be many opportunities to explore historic sites and natural wonders along the voyage during our week long adventure. *Some of the places we will explore are:

  • Cobb Island - explore beautiful small bays, see fish nets and crab traps;
  • St. Mary's River - Visit Historic St. Mary's City Museum, anchor in St. Indigoes Creek;
  • Point Lookout - first discovered in late 16th Century, today is a thousand-acre park and museum containing Civil War artifacts;
  • Solomons Island and Patuxent River - offers a treasure chest of Adventure and History, including John Smith's explorations in 1607-8,100-foot cliffs, long white beaches, wildlife sanctuary and research center, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, an historic plantation and Maryland's Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, just to name a view!

The CALLEVA is a beautiful 43' foot Beneteau Cyclades sailing sloop that is truly a pleasure to sail and a very seaworthy yacht. This week will be a true live-aboard sailboat experience.

Itinerary*:

  • Monday: Meet at Rileys Lock between 7-8am for continental breakfast. The Calleva bus brings campers and provisions to our home port. Board CALLEVA sailboat, leave marina and set sail. Sailing instructions/responsibilities/ safety procedures and boat overview, given before departure and reviewed while underway. First night anchor in cove, relax, swim and play!
  • Tuesday: We will leave the anchorage early and have full day’s sail and instruction (knots, nomenclature, points of sail). The night will be spent at anchor in one of the coves along the Lower Potomac River or Chesapeake Bay. Evening activities include star gazing, exploration of port. Discuss day activities and play games.
  • Wednesday: Practice navigation and plotting techniques using charts & GPS units. Execute specific points of sail per Sail Team. Explore landfalls and coves along the way.
  • Thursday: For our last full day at sail, each crew-team member takes a turn at the helm as "Skipper," to demonstrate tack and jibe technique's, communication and boat handling skills, and overall nautical sailing knowledge gained during the voyage!
  • Friday: After an early morning sail, return to Solomons Island, debrief, clean boat and ready for departure back to Riley's Lock to meet up with parents between 6-7pm for dinner and shares.
  • There will be daily opportunities for individuals to take turns deciding our itinerary and plotting our course. Our expert captain will have daily lessons in adjusting and trimming sails, navigating, chart reading, steering and mooring the boat, along the Lower Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Students will also be cooking, swabbing the decks, attending the lines, and other nautical chores.

Logistics: Calleva provides all logistical needs once the trip has started, however parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up students before and after the the trip.  For the Surfing CLS trip, parents must drop off students at Calleva Office at 7am on Monday Mornings, and pick them up on 7pm on Friday Evening. Calleva will shuttle surfing students to and from the boat.

Needs List: EVERYTHING SHOULD FIT INTO 1 CARRY-ON “SOFT”BAG! This is what we call a minimalist trip. All you need is 1 set each of Boat clothes, WHITE-SOLED deck or tennis shoes, flip-flops, beach towel, toilet kit, hat & sunglasses, Sun Screen, extra underwear,...oh, and a swimsuit or two. Bring a sleeping bag and a pillow and pillow case (we have pillows onboard).
