ABOUT WEEKEND KAYAKING:If you are ever wondering why you see so many kayaks on roof racks on or around the beltway, then you may want to call for an update! The Potomac River is an amazing place to get wet behind the ear and experience the wonderful world of kayaking. Calleva Headquarters is poised perfectly on the banks of the Potomac River with a deep and experienced background of leading and executing unequalled kayaking trips. Kayaking has coursed our veins, almost as long as the blood's been there and we want to share our enthusiasm with you. If you live in this area, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of this tremendous resource. The Potomac offers such a wide variety of paddling experiences that there will be much to anticipate. Calleva instructors will help build the necessary skills and confidence that will allow you to progress to wherever you want to take it. Our progressive packaging has been designed to build a strong and accurate foundation for you to expand upon. We provide the necessary skills that will give you security and success on whitewater.
Kayaking Class I (Riley's Lock to Seneca Creek)
Participants will be partnered off with the proper kayak and outfitted with the proper attire for this great blind date! We will start getting you comfortable with handling your new craft and equipment and flipping you upside down so you know that you can get out and how. As soon as we have mastered that, you are on your way to great things. We will play multiple games that will improve confidence, balance, and tighten the bonds between you and your boat. We will slowly increase the exercises towards basic strokes and concepts. Depending on how we are all feeling, participants will have the opportunity to run one short rapid!
Kayaking Class II (Riley's Lock to Seneca Creek)
We won't leave our inlet until we are all ready, and then we are off to some riffles! The next phase is to introduce you to moving water, and dissect the fundamentals of moving your craft in current. This gets fun with many small exercises that lead to short challenges and a broader understanding of moving your boat efficiently and accurately. Participants will be assisting fellow kayakers with t-rescues and encouraged to push themselves at a speed comfortable with their skill absorption. The base for the kayak roll will be introduced and participants will have the opportunity to see what is in store for them at their next class!
Kayaking Class III (Angler's Inn)
New location, new experiences! An introduction to the kayak roll, and the infamous hydraulic. Run a rapid, attain some moving water, and try to surf a hole with the assistance of superb leadership and instruction. In this class you will have amassed a good chunk of confidence and be asked to apply those skills that you have been working on. Be ready for some hardships, but with those hardships you will feel vast improvements. We will set up shop on or near a rapid and bring our skills up to where the river demands that we are. Here is the chance to surf your first hole and experience why kayaking is such a powerful and exciting sport.
Kayaking Class IV (Great Falls to Anglers Inn)
This is what you set out to do - paddle down the river! We put our kayaks in the Potomac underneath the beautiful Great Falls, and paddle down through the Mather Gorge to the origins of Kayaking Class III. Along the way we give the full river running experience. Participants are required to scout each rapid, make the decision to run and if so, which line they will attempt. We will talk extensively about reading the river and weighing the risks and consequences associated with each individual rapid. This class is designed to bring the broad scope of kayaking into focus and specifically peel apart the sport and the experience.
